Desert Veils Dance Troupe

Hidden in a high desert valley, a valley carved by the Colorado River, lives the town of Moab, Utah.  Moab is the home of two National Parks (Canyonlands and Arches), a State Park (Dead Horse Point), and is touted as being the Mountain Biking Capital of the world.

Also, inside that valley resides  Desert Veils,  a unique Tribal Belly-Dance troupe.

Desert Veils

Desert Veils was founded by Jamilla, who arrived in Moab in 1999.  As a master choreographer,  dance instructor, and photographer,  she captures the spirit of the desert through dance, music, and photography. Jamilla uses the beauty of the surrounding desert as inspiration for her dances, which have brought national praise from the dance community. Jamilla was recently listed in the International UNESCO Who’s Who of Dance. Desert Veils have performed over 250 times throughout the Southwest.  Desert Veils, over the years, has grown and changed like a chrysalis.

Jamilla

Jamilla is the fearless leader,  founder, and  inspiration behind this unique and talented band  of Tribal Belly Dancers.

Her Bio can be found here.

Jana

Jana has been with Desert Veils longer than any of the troupe (except Jamilla).  She is one of our favorite performers, as well as a favorite among audiences.  Between running a company and caring for two young children, she can only perform with us occasionally.  However, she is still an integral part of our troupe.

Jana made Belly Dancing history when she and her first born, Molly, performed with Desert Veils.

Melissa
Margo

Margo graduated from Grand County High School in 2008.  She is originally from Moscow, Russia, but moved to the USA in 2006.  She is going to college in Utah this fall.  Margo has been dancing with Desert Veils since she arrived in Moab.

"I have been dancing since I was very young and studied ballroom dance for 6 years. I have been dancing with Desert Veils for 2 years. It is my great pleasure to be part of this beautiful and talented group of women (of course I am one of them). Belly dancing always makes me happy. Every time I have some problems or anything like that, it brings me back to a good mood and makes me believe in myself. I also become more confident since I started belly dance. Belly dancing has been one of my dreams and I hope to continue dancing as I get older!"
Sam

Samantha is a high school student that has been studying with Jamilla for several years.  Sam is known for her back-bends, while balancing a sword.

To quote Sam  "I started studying belly dance with Jamilla, who was my next door neighbor. She thought I would like it and I really, really do! Belly dancing is very spiritual for me. It is like my therapy. I love being a part of Desert Veils!"
Tabetha

Tabetha is our newest performer.  She braved the world of live performance during our 2008 Moab Arts Festival appearance.  She will be seen performing in our upcoming Tribal Sands Belly Dance Festival.  Expect great things from Tabetha!!!
Madii

Madii is the next generation of Desert Veils.  This youngest member of Desert Veils has inherited her skill of dancing through her genetic structure.  Jamilla introduced her granddaughter, Madii, to audiences during the 2007-2008 performance season.
